Here is one of the select coins from one of our special buying trips. The attractive high eye appeal and surfaces of these rather unique coins are of superior quality for the assigned grade. In our searches at the numerous coin shows we attend, we buy only 2 out of 100 of the coins we look at. So what you are getting is the cream of the cream from a wise and discerning eye. This selection is the 1793 Flowing Hair Wreath Large cent with the Lettered Edge. This is the FIRST YEAR the Philadelphia Mint was in operation, and is only one of two denominations of coins made. (The other was the half cent). One of several varieties made this year, this was the second variety, made near the beginning of the year. Mintage of this coin was a bit over 63,000, but it is believed that less than 2,000 have survived in collectible grade. This is certified by PCGS as Fine Details, Genuine Not Gradable. Strong details for grade, especially on obverse. The date is fully readable, with LIBERTY and denticles at top very bold. Customary planchet surfaces, with small customary marks in fields noted. A small rim mark noted at 7 o’clock. Strong details on reverse, with the indicated planchet flaw at center affecting details inside wreath. A small rim bump at 1 o’clock. The letters around rim are a bit weak from 12 to 2 o’clock. Premium quality for grade, with only a few of the flaws nearly always found on the first few years of copper coins.
