SS Republic Shipwreck Seated Liberty Half Dollars US, Louisiana & CSA 3 Coin Set AS153

1 in stock

Here is a super rare, col find!  These coins were all minted in New Orleans by 3 different governments:  the 1860-O by the United States, the 18161-O W-08 by the territory of Louisiana, and the 1861-O by the Confederate States of American.  These coins are all certified by NGC, however, they are not graded as they were under the ocean for 130 years!  Had they not been soaking in the ocean, they would have graded as Uncirculated.  The set comes with all of the original paperwork.  There are 6 different die pairings for the 1861-O Louisiana issue.  The one in this set is the W-08.  There are 6 different die pairings for the 1861-O C.S.A. issue.  The one in this set is the W-15 FS-901 speared olive.

In 1865, after the Civil War, gold and silver coins were loaded onboard the ship, SS Republic, which was built in 1853.  Bound for New Orleans, the ship sunk in a fierce hurricane.  Almost all of the passengers survived by boarding lifeboats and a makeshift raft.  The cargo, meant to rebuild New Orleans, was reported to be $400,000 (face value in 1865) worth of gold and silver.  The coins laid undisturbed under the ocean for 138 years off the coast of Georgia.  After years of planning, a crew of treasure hunters and historians launched a ship named Odyssey Exploration.  The Odyssey Exploration, with a submersible tethered in tandem, found the shipwreck and used a suction cup fitted to the submersible to pick up many coins one by one.  After a few months, they had fully recovered 17,000 coins and artifacts.
